Our generation will face a HUGE challenge in the 21st century: most people in the world live in poverty, without access to basic resources like clean water, electricity and good health care...BUT globally, humans are already using too many resources, causing deforestation, water shortages, climate destabilization, extinctions, and soil degradation. So if we keep using more resources to help the poor, we will eventually have fewer and fewer resources, until we don't have enough to go around and we are all fighting for them (worse than we are now.) The developing world cannot develop in the same way that the industrialized world did. (And the industrialized world must change the way it operates.) How do we accomplish this?

Our Task just released the Youth Earth Plan (YEP), which describes the outlook for our global future and gives recommendations on how to improve our future. We must shift our global culture from one of pure consumption to a culture of sustainability. We can accomplish this shift by changing the policies and practices of our culture-shaping institutions of government, international organizations, science, education, media, religious/spiritual, civil society. The YEP points out that we must stop measuring success by GDP or financial profit alone and begin to incorporate health, social justice, and environmental well-being in our measures of success.

What do you think of the Youth Earth Plan?
